Using VPN and the dns on the tvpad 4 11/5/2015

I live in the U.S. and my parent use the tvpad 4 to watch HK drama and TV show to kill time. The tvpad didn't work even after I update the firmware to 5.0.60, so what I did was change the dns. The tvpad app store worked, but when I try to run any of the app it won't connect to the servers. I figure they must be blocking ip from the U.S. since the tvpad app store work that mean I can connect to something. I hook up another router just for the tvpad to use a VPN to connect, but it still didn't work all the apps still wont connect. This time I set the tvpad to manual ip configure the tvpad to the router that is using the vpn and the tvpad dns this is where everything worked fine the tvpad and all of the apps is working.

The link below will show you how to setup Vpn on the router.
How to setup VPN on a router

Okay, for people that wants to go with the VPN. You have 3 options. I only have a tvpad4, and using PureVPN so can't help with other versions.

1. use VPN software like OpenVPN, VPNgate, PureVPN, etc. Install app on tvpad and setup the software there. Read other forum on how to load non-app store apps.

2. use existing Router, yes, you don't need a second router. Basically made your whole home network on VPN.

3. use a second router and dedicated TVPad on that 2nd router. Separating regular home network and VPN network.

the way to setup vpn is very simple. You DON'T need to flash any firmware on router and DON'T need a VPN router. a regular router that allows PPTP is fine.

For those who remembers the early DSL craze knows what PPTP was, basically ISP company give you a username and password, and requires you to login in order to use the internet. So all router already have this function built-in.

On the Internet (WAN) section of your router, set your connection type to PPTP. enter the VPN server IP address, username, and password. and that's it. You're done. all your devices are now on VPN. you can check by going to google website. it will automatically switch to the country's google search engine.

the way to setup the 2 router approach is the same way. except you have to wire the 2nd router.
on 2nd router, plug the WAN port into any of your regular router LAN port. make sure your regular router is giving out IP address (DHCP mode).

And that's it. you can use the 2nd router wifi and connect the tvpad through that, or plug into any of the 2nd router LAN ports. You can even have other computers using the 2nd router LAN port and access country restricted websites. i.e. mytv.tvb.com (which only allows Hong Kong user access)

what's the IP address network for the 2nd router? As long as it's NOT the same as the first router, anything is fine. Routers does not like the WAN and LAN to be in the same subnet.

i.e. my 1st router IP is 192.168.2.X my 2nd router IP is 192.168.3.X.

If you don't understand any of these acronyms or how to setup a network, then good luck. You need more help than this forum can provide. Learn the basic network setup first before attempt fixing your tvpad.

Note: I don't suggest installing Vpn app in the tvpad for those who don't know much about technology, it can cause network problem in tvpad (example my parents). If you unplug tvpad or there is no power while vpn app is still running in tvpad, it will mess up the wan and lan connection on the tvpad. Making it unconnectable to the Internet. In order to fix this you have to restore the tvpad and reload all the apps back into tvpad. I suggest using a dedicated router for vpn so it limits this possibility from happening. There is also another method of setting Vpn for tvpad such as a dedicated raspberry pi or computer but those are more expensive and complicated. I also don't suggest to use any device that won't be dedicated as a type of router for tvpad because it will constantly cause the apps to not work properly.

you mention VPN, so there must an address on the other end. So you're saying you're connecting to a server in china through VPN? We know their fully functioning servers are limiting users either by mac address or IP address. If you're saying VPN works, it does sound like it's limited by IP address. So where does your VPN tunnel ends up since you live in the states.

I believe they do block IP based on region. So, a VPN does sound like a plausible solution. What VPN and how to set one up in either HK or china? Vpn also slows their ngs down too, might impact the streaming, right?

good luck in finding free vpn servers. All the good one you need to subscribe. unless you're in a company that works international and you're just connecting for "work" related.

I gave that up when I wanted to watch some websites that's region locked.

This is my setup I'm using 2 router one is just for the tvpad, so I don't have to keep going to the router to switch my ip back to the U.S. the first router is connected to the internet, and the second router is connected to the first router to get internet. The vpn is on the second router where the tvpad is and the vpn out address is in hong kong. I also tested this on tvpad 2 and all apps is also working this I believe is because they are blocking ip address outside of china. The vpn service i'm using is purevpn if you guys want to know, it is a paid vpn service for $40 a year. The speed I'm seeing on the tvpad I'm getting anywhere from 500kbp/s to 1.5mbp/s everything is running smooth.

I sideloaded a vpn apk and vpn to Canada with 49.213.10.163 dns. All app works 100% with old firmware 5.056 . Only issue is I had to do a system restore at 1 point and it refuse to display at 1080 after. Now the menu and all apps only display at 720.

Did your tvpad output at 1080 after upgrade to 5.0.60?

Did you have to flash your second router before you can set it up as a vpn router?

I browse the app store, it doesn't have any app called tv file manager.

Mine neither, and I also installed the ???? and upgraded it to 5.0.5 but it never launched successfully though, so I couldn't install ES-File nor Apk-Installer :-(

It would be very helpful if we can load/install apk as wanted.

    Please advise.

I found if you switch to DNS 183.57.43.70 and open app store immedately, you can download apps from apps store without getting restriction message. And then I downloaded the app called ??? from the app store. Reboot and auto DNS. At least, you can some live channels like CCTV with this apps. Somewhat make this box tiny bit useful at this time.
